The providential God

What comes to your mind when you hear of Stone Cold Steve Austin, Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix, The Heart Break Kid Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart the Hit Man, Jerry King Lawler, Eve Torres, David Otunga, Triple H, Macho Man Randy Savage, John Cena, Dwayne the Rock Johnson, Randy Orton etc?

It brings home childhood memories, possibly that time when you would climb on the school desk and attempt to hop like Koffi Kingston, smash your opponent only to land very hard on the cemented floor and dislocate your elbow. Perhaps you wanted to chokeslam that bully boy like The Undertaker, only to receive an absolute drubbing.

Scripted and predetermined are the words that define professional entertainment wrestling.

The match session, leading moves, finishing moves and outcome are decided. The significant events of a match are designed and discussed beforehand, and so is the result. Some notable developments are planned — for instance, someone might meddle in a game just as the lousy chap, or ‘heel’, is about to lose. In WWE, each match is assigned a producer, who will draw the major events of the game in agreement with the wrestlers. In smaller wrestling venues the preparation is much less detailed. The duration of the match is also decided prior, and the referee is time custodian. If you were to put a timer on the matches on, say, WWE, you might notice that there are broad, 5, 15 and 25-minute matches.

The referee is not just an impartial spectator. The referee maintains a record of the time and tells wrestlers when end the match. He also communicates things between wrestlers, and assists in the overall story by ‘inadvertently’ getting bumped into during a match, so that the bad guy or “heel”, like Randy Orton, can cheat. The referee needs to keep within the purpose of rule-keeping (disqualifications, count-outs, pinfalls). In WWE rings, the referee uses a wireless earpiece to receive directions from backstage. This is necessary, especially during television broadcasts, when time limitations may require the grapplers to wrap up a match more pronto. During a medical emergency, the referee has the responsibility to end a match if he deems that one of the wrestlers is gravely injured, and he has to check this discretion with the show’s need to follow the scripted account.

He pulls the strings

God is the sole Ruler, the King of kings, and Lord of lords (1 Timothy 6:15): His throne is in the heavens, and His kingdom rules over all (Psalms 103:19). He sustains the whole universe by His powerful word (Nehemiah 9:6; Hebrews 1:3).

The government of the entire universe is His (Deuteronomy 10:14; Psalms 135:6; Daniel 4:35).

God sets the boundaries for the peoples of the world (Deuteronomy 32:8).

He can make a nation large or small (Obadiah 2).

In the affairs of the world, and its rulers, the Lord, put down one leader and lifts another (1 Samuel 16:1; Psalms 75:7).

God is at work in unrecognised events and processes to achieve His purposes of blessing. It was the Lord who sent Joseph ahead of his brothers to Egypt (Psalms 105:16-22); it was the Lord who turned the hearts of the Egyptians to hate God’s people (Psalms 105:25); it was the Lord who called Cyrus, a heathen ruler, ‘His anointed’ because He was going to use him to accomplish His will for His people (Isaiah 44:28, Isaiah 45:1-4).

God had promised a blessing on all nations and a ruler of God’s people (Jesus) as a descendant of Abraham and David, of the tribe of Judah. This couldn’t have happened if Haman had destroyed all the Jews.

Esther 4:14 – Mordecai clearly states the essence of providence: deliverance will arise for the Jews (God’s people). God’s purpose will not fail.

The result: in spite of his high power, Haman failed so terribly that, while not one single Jew died, Haman was decimated in the very way he wanted to kill Mordecai. That is God’s Providence.

Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be (Psalm 139:16).
