According to National Geographic, the Black Mamba’s bite has a 100% fatality rate. To make it scarier, the black mamba, in most of the cases, kills in less than 30 minutes. It reminds me of a television episode I watched back on National Geographic that showed a black mamba biting a lion. Within one hour, the lion had succumbed. Interestingly, the snake opened its black mouth wide in an attempt to swallow the lifeless lion. The snake had bitten more than what it could take.
Toxicologists say that the black mamba is one of the most venomous snakes on the planet. With a very low LD50 (actually 0.28 mg/kg), one full bite from a black mamba produces venom sufficient to kill ten humans!
It is a marvel to see humans handle venomous snakes with no hint of fear scribbled on their faces. Nevertheless, even the most trained and skilled snake catcher can still be bitten. For example, Al Arabiya reported last year (March 2018), that one of the famous snake catcher from Malaysia, Abu Zarin Hussin, nicknamed ‘snake whisperer’ died after being bitten by King Cobra. Hussin suffered hypotension, fell into a coma and passed on while undergoing treatment. Sad indeed!
In the animal kingdom, it makes sense to be an eagle, a mongoose or a honey badger. In its hunt, when bitten by a poisonous snake, the honey badger merely slumbers for a moment then wakes up to feed on its delicacy.
Take hold of the scaring situation
In the book of Exodus, God commands Moses, to take by the tail, the serpent he was running away from.
‘The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.”
Moses threw it on the ground, and it became a snake, and he ran from it.
Then the Lord said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand.’ Exodus 4:3-4 (NIV).
Now, picture this.
- God instructs Moses to throw down his staff
- It turns into a serpent
- Moses starts to run away
- God commands him to take it by hand
- Moses does precisely according to God’s command and voila his vademecum is restored.
God has given us assignments. Somewhere along the way, things get tough, and we take off. But God could be speaking to you right now. His message is simple – but not simplistic; He wants you to stop running away and instead seize, by hand, that scary stuff in your life. Face it head-on; that thing that terrifies you the most and makes you want to run away. That situation that sends shivers down your spine, and makes you want to hibernate need to be checked. It needs to be dealt with.
One way to deal with it is through prayer. Add on it fasting. Face the giants on your knees before you encounter them in the streets. Slay the dragon in your closet before you slay it in real life.
That stuff that puts you to a flight can turn out to be the staff that God uses to show forth His glory. Keep your powder dry, then at full pelt, go back to that damn thing and defy it.
