If indeed this life is all that there is and if this earth came to exist by accident, then you might as well do whatever makes you feel good because it is all absurd anyway. Plants, animals, and human beings exist by sheer chance with no reason or purpose. Whatever society decides is the truth, is the truth. Good is only determined by majority rule. Why does anyone who believes this bother to keep on living? If you are fortunate enough to achieve something striking in this life then at best your actions may be written down and remembered for a few hundred years by some other humans whose lives are as insignificant and short-lived as your own. When the sun eventually burns out, or some other catastrophe destroys this world, whether it is in 100 years or 100 billion years, it will all be meaningless.
Why shouldn’t people kill, steal, loot and cheat their fellow human being? We are all just animals after all, and we have only a short time on this earth. If it helps us or makes us feel good, then why not do it?
“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all humankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil”. Ecclesiastes 12?:14 (NIV).
After writing eleven chapters about the absolute meaninglessness of all earthly pursuits, Solomon concludes in two short sentences that the purpose of life is to serve God. Why shouldn’t people kill, steal, rape and cheat their fellow human being? Because we are all one family and God is our Father. There is the truth, it is good, there is justice, there is God.
If you are not a Christian and you are not depressed already, then you should be. Without God, life is utterly meaningless. You can lie to yourself for a time and convince yourself otherwise, but soon enough, you will realise the truth. Why are so many of the famous, wealthy and powerful people depressed? Why do people with crowds of fans who “love” them turn to drugs to feel good? Because they get to the top, they get what they ultimately wanted, and they find it all to be meaningless. The only things worth investing in are God’s children, me and you. By all means seek success, wealth, love and joy, but only so that it can allow you to serve others and thus serve God better. All of life’s pursuits should be a means to an end, and that end should be obeying the greatest commandments:
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV).
Jesus is our meaning for life. Everything else is completely meaningless.
