The bane of our times is that everyday multitudes watch televisions, listen to radios, read blogs and books, and sit on church pews each weekend but seldom apprehend the One who made their seeing, hearing, understanding and gathering viable. All they hear are people and stuff instead of the Person.
While the Bible declares that “godliness with contentment is great gain” disciples of the Lord Jesus have been brought up to understand that “godliness with contentment is an absurdity”.
We have stooped too low to feed societal pressures and post-modern charm.
Let us look at the predicament the church of Laodicea found herself in:
“You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” (Revelation 3:17)
Does that sound familiar?
The unappeasable pursuance of wealth in the place of sound faith and discipleship is a grave curse in our lives. Inadequately equipped believers shortly find themselves forming their faith in extremely unstable terrains. Rather than giving them the Sota (Greek for Saviour), we are giving them things.
Fortunately, Jesus gives a solution:
“I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich, and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness, and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.” (verse 18)
Let us revisits our first love, just like Christ told all the churches he rebuked in the book of Revelation. Let us not seek abundant life minus the Sota.
Someone will say, ‘But doesn’t God want me to succeed in life?’
Of course, He does but your focus should always be on Him, not the success because there is always a danger of viewing your success through the eyeglass of the world and not through the microscope of Christ.
Hearken to what Jesus told Zacchaeus: “Today salvation has come to this house” (Luke 19:9a). Where are the people who are seeking this person whom Zacchaeus met and his life was transformed? When will we stop soliciting things and seek after a Person?
He is the complete package! He is the entirety of life and abounding life!
Grace and peace
