God is Great

It is incredible how God works. He astounds us every day and all seasons. The Name Ezra means ‘ Help.’ It is the Name of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. Through Ezra, God was telling (and is telling us too) Jewish people that He is their Help –  as they returned from Babylon to Jerusalem and as they endeavoured to rebuild the Temple.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—

where does my help come from?

My Help comes from the Lord,

the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV).

The name Nehemiah means ‘Comforter’ or ‘The Lord is Comfort.’ It is the Name of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. Through Nehemiah, God was comforting (and comforts us too) the Jews as they went about with civil works, fanning spiritual fervency and unification of Israel as a community after returning from captivity.

I, even I, am he who comforts you.

Who are you that you fear mere mortals,

human beings who are but grass. Isaiah 51:12 (NIV).

Interestingly, the two Books are one in the Hebrew Bible – the Book of Ezra.

The Name Esther means ‘I am hidden’ or ‘hiding place.’ It describes the nature of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament – Hidden and mysterious in His ways. God was working behind the scenes (providentially) to bring about his plan to the Jewish people. It is important to note that the whole Book of Esther has no God’s Name. He was hidden and working behind the scenes.

Truly you are a God who has been hiding himself, the God and Savior of Israel. Isiah 45:15 (NIV).

It is crucial to know that the broken walls of Jerusalem did not stop God from being a Helper.

It is comforting to know that the destruction of Solomon’s Temple did not stop God from being a Comforter.

It is a revelation to know that the imminent holocaust that was facing Jews did not stop God from working behind the scenes, hiding them in His wings.

The stories in the three books of the Old Testament happened almost the same time. So God showed His people that He cares.

God still cares. His Holy Spirit is working to help, comfort and reveal the will of God to the Church.

Vulnerability (due to broken city walls), spiritual decadence (due to the destroyed Temple), and uncertainty (due to impending genocide) in our world (as a person and as humanity) do not stop God from carrying out His intentions.

This God is Great! He is excellent in power and might.

He brings out His plans without the counsel of man or woman.

I marvel at His incomprehensibility, and His knowability leaves me in wonderment.

That is why I worship Him.
