Time and again, we have had tyrants who have brandished their disproportionate power to the detriment of fellow human beings. History is brimming with such. They are juggernauts who exalted themselves above their measures, and being full of themselves, set out to fulfil heinous ambitions in a bloodcurdling manner. Their get-up-and-go was hell-bent from the word go.
Most of these tyrants did not only desecrates the sanctity of life, but also the name of the Almighty God. Let us have a peek into their sacrilegious peaks.
Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin is the man who catapulted wickedness to the highest level before and during the Second World War. He still has a spot on the Hall of despots. He is listed among who is who in the world of human imbecility and depravity. His biography is an almanack of how to be a degenerate human being.
Stalin’s exceedingly evil ways increased exponentially and exacerbated human suffering in the former Soviet Union. He transmuted from a trainee priest to a revolutionary bank robber, and then finally a murderous dictator. He regressed from the podium of sacrosanctity to the pit of sacrilege. His metamorphosis from puparium to a dragon was abysmal, to say the least.
Joseph Stalin degenerated from a Psalm reader to a palm-reader; in the sense that he misled his people with his idiosyncratic interpretation of life matters. He became worse than the pounding and pouncing Siberian Tiger. He became the largest cat roaming in the Soviet Union and terrorising his own people.
Stalin was the leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from 1929 to 1953. According to him, the Soviet Union could achieve industrial growth by means of Communist philosophy and eventually become a power bloc. To this end, he topped. However, in this too, he found a rationalisation for his ghastly crimes against humanity. It is estimated that he killed roughly 3 million to 6o million Russians. One of the most affected groups was the Russian Orthodox Church that telescoped with each passing day of Stalin’s reign.
Not only did he proclaim atheism but also propagated it too. Hungriness for Christians’ blood was anchored in his anger towards Christianity. ‘You know, they are fooling us, there is no God… all this talk about God is sheer nonsense.’ He neither spared Christians nor Muslims. To him, killing came as easy as talking and this can be confirmed by his statement, ‘One death is a tragedy; one million is a statistic.’
It is reported that Stalin was an avid reader. He acquired a copy of Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species at age 13. At one time he was talking with his friends about the society’s disparities between the rich and the poor. He shocked them by saying ‘God’s not unjust, and he doesn’t actually exist. We’ve been deceived. If God existed, he’d have made the world more just. I’ll lend you a book and you’ll see.’ To this, he gave them Darwin’s book.
The seminary Stalin schooled in failed to address his deepest life questions. The seeds of atheism were not destroyed. The Un-Christlike behaviour of its teachers added salt to injury. His spiritual vacuum was filled up with thoughts and beliefs of revolutionaries. Whatever happened after this is recorded in History Books.
Nero was a Roman Emperor in the First Century who is believed to have killed St. Paul. He was a true beast of Rome, a hedonist, and a tyrant. He executed his mother, Christians and is said to have “fiddled while Rome burned.” He is one of the most despicable manifestations of human evil in flesh. His life was characterised by decadence, ferocity, and overindulgence. He slew his teacher and advisor, the great philosopher Seneca. A lot about Nero was written by historians Tacitus and Josephus.
Kim Il Sung
There are many things that cross my mind whenever I think of North Korea: Nuclear weapons tests, ballistic missiles tests, exaggerated bravado and chest-thumping of Kim Jong-Un, United Nations sanctions and perpetually devastating famine. Despite the hyped military prowess, stage-managed achievements, inflated exhilarations, and the fact that it boasts of 40% of its population as military personnel, North Korea has not escaped the grinding grips of poverty and hunger. Its leader has an ego to protect, and that is why he must perform frequent gymnastics and summersaults.
Kim Il Sung wrote in his biography, “My mother went to church every Sunday and I went with her. When I asked her why she went there she said, ‘Just to relax.’ After that, at church services, I found that she wasn’t listening to the service but was dozing off and she wouldn’t wake up until the last amen. We can see from this that religious believers may attend church, not because there is God; they go to regulate their conscience. I maintain that if one had to believe in a God he should believe in the God of Korea. It is laudable to cherish the God of Korea in one’s heart and not do things harmful to the state. Do you believe in heaven? Has anyone been there?”
Kim Il Sung was the Communist leader of North Korea from 1948 until his death in 1994. He made himself a god and went on a rampage killing Christians and people of other religions. His son Kim Jong Il became the son of god and the current leader as the grandson of god. The impoverished citizens are at his mercy.
It is estimated that by the year 2030 China will have many Christians than the United States of America. The US currently holds the title of being the country with the largest number of Christians. With Communist Party’s ascendancy to power in the late 1940s, Mao Zedong declared war on any kind of religion. He is reported to have told Dalai Lama that Religion is poison. In point of fact, there are serious logical problems with such assertions, but we will not venture into this.
One of the famous Chines actress of the time, Jiang Qin, who was also a major political figure and the fourth wife to the Chairman Mao Zedong, once said that Christianity in China had been confined to the history section of the Museum. On the contrary, it appears her husband and herself are the once who are confined to the history section of the museum.
Amin ruled Uganda with an iron fist from 1971 to 1979. He engineered an uncanny rule of horror that set him above average in terms of human deficiency.
“I don’t like human flesh. It’s too salty for me”, Amin would say. He never at any point denied that he was a cannibal.
Uganda’s “Big Daddy” never explained how he learned this culinary lesson.
He named himself “Lord of all Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular.” Hilarious! But to history students, there are hilarious titles than this.
Some uncorroborated quarters say that he sent Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II a telegram that read, “Dear Liz, if you want to know a real man, come to Kampala.” The Queen resisted the invitation. His uncanny behaviour could even shock the Gorillas of Bwindi Forest. He went on a spree killing any creature called a Christian. A notable victim was Archbishop Janani Luwum.
Pol Pot was the leader of Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. 1979 is the year Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias was in the same country for evangelism assignment. Pol Pot devoured not less than two million Cambodians. The Cambodian Viper banned Religion, all leading Buddhist monks were killed and almost all temples destroyed. Half the Cham Muslim population was murdered, and 8,000 Christians.
There are numerous tyrants who have waged battles against Christianity. These battles have only served to spread it. It is a fool’s errand to try fight what you do not understand. The end of such a fight is futility.
The fuss and farce employed by these tyrants did not stop Christianity from spreading. It was all Vanity of Tyranny; that cannot stop the Cross from crossing chasms.
