The Spiritual Antennae

On March 10, 2015, Reuters ran an article about a scientific study on cockroaches with some interesting conclusions. According to the findings by the researchers from Belgium, Cockroaches do have personalities. Issac Planas, who was the lead researcher on the project said that roaches could reach a choice and have consensus decision making similar to sheep, bats, some monkey species, fish, birds, and humans.
If these findings are anything to go by, then probably we are close to knowing why this insect has stubbornly stuck in our kitchens.
I have observed these nocturnal creatures transact their business in a fashion that has always been dazzling. One of these astounding behaviours is their ability to groom and do it with zeal and zest, as it is on purpose. In particular, these insects are smart at cleaning their antennae.
As per general scientific knowledge, insect antennae are used to “smell” and as “feelers,” or organs of touch.

Why would insects clean their antennae?
According to entomologists grooming of antennae clears the microscopic pores and leaves them in position to receive transmissions from the environment unhindered. Antennal cleaning is necessary to remove both natural substances and foreign substances so that the insect can respond to its environment. Leaving antennae dirty cuts down on an insect’s ability to sense its surroundings.
Perhaps our cats let roaches and other insects in on a little secret about cleanliness: Turns out, the creepy crawlies incessantly groom themselves to keep their antennae free from environmental pollutants and chemicals the insects themselves produce.
Observing the insect closely, one would discover that they frequently clean their antennae by using their front-legs to put them in their mouth where they can then clean off every segment.

Are Spiritual antennae paramount to us?
The Book of 2nd Kings 6:8-22 records a remarkable account whereby Prophet Elisha traps blinded Arameans who had come to arrest him.
The most sticking point in the account is the ability of Elisha to see hills full of horses and chariots of fire and the inability of his servant to see the same.
Hanging around a great prophet, and serving him, does not necessarily make our spiritual antennae active. We can serve diligently, with our whole heart, and even wake up early in the morning, but unless we cleanse our antennae we will always miss out on important spiritual realities. With our sensing systems clogged, we will always live scared, worried and anxious. The propensity to fly is fanned by the fire of fear. The fire of fear, on the other hand, is lit by greases and dirty oil material deposits that clog our antennae.
Thank God that Elisha the Prophet came to his rescue: He prayed for him.
‘Then Elisha prayed and said, “O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see” And the LORD opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.’ 2nd Kings 6:17 (NIV).
It was only after a prayer that the servant’s spiritual eyes opened.
Just like Elisha’s servant, there are many times in life when we do not know what to do. This happens frequently during times of crises. However, the Bible in Romans 8:26 tells us that we can find help in the Holy Spirit. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
That is a reassuring promise. Isn’t it?

Can we cleanse our Spiritual antennae?
We cannot be able to gather important spiritual information from our environment if our antennae remain uncleaned. Life becomes pretty hard row to hoe when we cannot get transmissions from the spiritual realm. Fear, apathy, anxiety and worry set in like a burglar.
But there is hope. God in his infinite wisdom has made it possible for us to access the cleansing water as provided in His word. This water has been made freely available to all and sundry. Just like a normal bath, no one can coerce you to make use of it. We have to realize its importance and decided to use it. Cleansing of our antennae should be a lifestyle if we have to remain spiritually informed.
The word of God is often referred to as water in the Bible because it acts as a cleansing agent. Exodus tells us that Moses was instructed to make a bronze basin and fill it with water. The priests would wash both their hands and feet before they entered the Tabernacle so “that they die not.” (Exodus 30:17-21).
A ceremonial washing with water symbolizes greater purity when God says in Ezekiel 36:25. “I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.”
As believers in Christ Jesus, we can approach God with assurance and in confidence (Hebrews 10:22, “let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.”)
The Word of God is able to clean and set us on our marks, ready for spiritual exchange.
We are invited to take the first thing smoking out of town, take a bath in these wells and stay spiritually alert.
