The Early Warning Systems

In the year 1997, the British Medical Journal ran an intriguing story about a woman they christened AB. AB was on a holiday when she heard two voices in her head telling her to return home immediately. She heeded the voices and went straight to London. While in the city, the voices gave her an address that turned out to be a hospital’s brain scan department. The voices informed her to go to that address and ask for a brain scan as she had a brain tumor and her brain stem was inflamed. Surprisingly the woman did not have any symptom of bad health; not even a headache. She went to the department and a scan was conducted straightaway. The results tested positive for tumor. She was operated and treated. Thereafter she still heard the voices again: ‘We are pleased to have helped you. Good-bye.’ The woman made a full recovery from the tumor.

In the Animal Kingdom…………..

Animals do not have rich and advanced communication skills like humans. However, they still interact with one another. Communication in the wild involves passing warning signals. For example, the crows and ravens change their behaviour to warn others of a looming peril. Unprecedented squawking can be a warning. Their migratory patterns can speak of great changes in weather patterns. For hunters, watching birds’ behaviour can be important because they can alert you of lurking danger in the woods.

Squirrels and chipmunks have similar behaviour of chattering and scolding. You can tell if something fishy is being cooked in the thickets by listening to these voices made by rodents, and observing their behaviour. The chickens, especially the chick nursing hens, can sense danger and warn her young ones by producing a characteristic noise. Even at nigh the chicken can pick changes in their unseen environment and communicate effectively.

Snakes, rats, weasels and centipedes leave their habitation as early as possible to a safe place just before an earthquake hits. Anecdotal evidence exist whereby animals exhibit strange behaviour weeks to seconds before an earthquake occurs. A good example is the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

Isn’t it interesting?

In the military……

In the military, early warning systems’ importance cannot be overemphasized. Militaries of the world use range of systems to warn them of enemy fire. Enemy activities can be tracked and help in planning for pre-emption or countermeasures.

For example, many countries employ reconnaissance and espionage to uncover activities of perceived enemies. In fact this is not limited to enemies alone; even friends and frenemies are targeted. It is not shocking to find United States spying on United Kingdom and vice versa, or Israel spying on United States and vice versa.

Countries go even to the extent of using satellites to accomplish this crucially vital function. Unfortunately only few countries can afford such high level of spying. Radars are part and parcel of these systems.

To maintain a qualitative military advantage, a nation must work hard to circumvent the hurdles of an enemy or perceived enemy. And this obviously land us in the land of strange words such as stealth fighter, bomber, decoy and submarines.

In Human Body……..

Most of the time our bodies manifest signs and symptoms as a way of alerting us of an impending sickness. A headache could be a sign of a serious underlying health problem. A stomachache could also be a sign of a lethal infection or a condition that requires emergency medical services.

In all these scenarios, early warning systems are very important. Without a prior alert, things can go south whether in military, health or natural environment. Smoke detectors serve a very important role in our lives.

“This is the way; walk in it.”

I am one of those people who are not fond of surprises. I prefer being prepared for things to come. I normally plan for things in my life. This does not mean I cannot yield to the extemporaneous. I occasionally do, but generally prefer some kind of early notices. Psychologists tell us that this proclivity boils down to personalities. There are those folks who jump into the ship as fast as it appears and there those ones who make calculations first.

It mean that I require at least substantial information about something before I buy into it. I know there are advantages and disadvantages for this. But we are not going to discuss theme here as this will derail us from our topic.

The Bible tells us in the Book of Isaiah 30:21 that God is not just able to, but also willing to offer us early warnings. He is in a position to grant us directions even when we reach the crossroad of life. This is possible because the God of the Bible is allknowing, allpowerful and everywhere. He is also full of benevolence.

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

– Isaiah 30:21

I believe that God will always warn us whenever we are about to take a wrong route. He can also let us take a wrong route – like the prodigal son in Luke 15 – but then warn us to retreat. In any case our good Lord does not want us to end in misery and mithraic mysteries. In fact there are examples in the Bible when God intervened to force His servants take the route He had ordained for them. Jonah offers a good example.

There is always a voice whispering in our ears, ‘don’t take that route, avoid that highway……..’

This is the voice that prevent future calamities. It is an early warning system from our Loving Father.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

– Psalm 32:8

This voice has been given several names: intuition, instinct, sixth sense, Holy Spirit……

I call Him the Holy Spirit. The bottom line is that we are never alone.

May God help us learn to listen, discern and obey His voice. We would avoid many pitfalls and pain if we heeded His voice.

He is a God of Early Warning Systems.
